As part of its expansion in Africa, Marriott International has signed a contract to open seven new hotels, consisting of four in Ghana, one in Kenya and two in Nigeria. Hyatt Hotels & Resorts recently announced plans to expand into Africa, with plans to develop six new hospitals across Africa to open by 2020, doubling its presence on the continent.
After the opening, Marriott International will manage a 44-room Marriott Executive Apartments in Lagos owned and developed by Landmark Africa Group.
The 25-storey hotel, which is due to open in 2020, is the first of its kind in Nigeria and one of the largest in the world. It is scheduled to open in 2022 and is also part of a mixed-use development that includes hotel, office and retail space as well as residential and office space for hotel guests.
The Societe Des Lagunes hotel will be located directly on the waterfront in a residential area that also includes an embassy district. It is part of 4 Mac, owned by a group of investors from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States of America.
The hotel, owned by Ivory Coast Investments, is due to open in 2021 and will be part of a mixed-use development that will include hotels, restaurants, retail and office space, as well as residential and retail space. The 300-room Sheraton Abidjan is also being rebuilt, according to a press release from 4 Mac. The 200-room Abidsjan Marriott Hotel is located near the presidential palace, but whether the existing hotel will be revived after a major renovation is not yet decided.
The company is also launching Aloft in Abidjan, with the first hotel set to open in 2019, according to a press release.
The Sheraton Bamako, which marks the debut of Marriott International in Mali, includes the company's first hotel under its debut Four Points brand. According to a press release, the company will open its first four-star hotel in Abidjan in the next few weeks.
The company will make its debut in Ivory Coast and strengthen its presence in existing markets such as Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria. The brand is expected to be launched in Ethiopia in 2021. Hyatt also plans to invest and expand its current portfolio in Morocco and Tanzania, while also introducing brands in Algeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Senegal. The company will also grow in Africa by investing in its first four-star hotel in Kenya, the first of its kind in the country.
Hilton has also unveiled its expansion plans for the continent, with plans to invest $50 million in building its first four-star hotel in Kenya and opening a new hotel on the outskirts of the city.
East Africa is of particular importance to these groups as they seek even more investment opportunities in the region. In an effort to strengthen Africa's hotel industry, several hotel groups, including Marriott, have stepped up their expansion plans in Africa to capitalize on growing demand. In August 2017, STR data showed that the Africa Hotel pipeline includes 57,011 guest rooms, with 301 projects currently under development and another 301 under development.
Marriott is seeking a strong presence in Africa, particularly in East Africa and the Middle East. The company is expected to support the expansion of its rebranding of the Hilton brand in the region by opening a new hotel in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
